we still need masks in 2024
🥳 Masking is an incredibly effective tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep our communities safe. While vaccines are variant-dependent and less effective over time, we can always count on masks for protection. You can brush up on some basic facts about the ongoing pandemic here.
🫱🏽🫲🏾Organizers are working hard to increase access to high-quality masks! Though our governments have failed to make masks accessible, many individuals and groups provide free high-quality masks in their communities.
😷 People are still masking! You may not see us out and about often, as many of us limit time in crowded and public spaces. If you are still masking, or thinking about masking again, you are not alone! Check out University of Masking and MaskTogetherAmerica for some masked face solidarity.
what kind of mask to wear in 2024
You want a high-quality, well-fitting mask. Here’s a quick overview:
🎉 N95s are excellent. These also provide effective protection against wildfire air pollution! They are approved by NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) and almost all have head straps to ensure a tight seal (the Readimask being a main exception). You may want to try out the different shapes to see which fits your face and needs best.
👍🏽 KN95 and KF94s are also very good. They have ear loops which may be better for some people. They are made to a non-US standard, Chinese for KN95 and South Korean for KF94.
🤷🏽 Double masking or wearing one surgical mask is an okay option that provides some protection. Cloth masks alone are ineffective.
✨ P100 masks are stellar with even better filtration than an N95 for extra protection from COVID-19 and air pollution, especially in higher-risk situations.
♻️ High-quality masks can be reused! High-quality masks are more expensive than cloth or surgical masks, but they can be reused and are generally more durable.
😷 A well-fitting mask with a good seal to avoid leakage is essential, regardless of the type of mask.
